The passengers can choose one of kind transferring for their trip as:
Flying to/from Dong Hoi Airport which is 170km north of Hue could be a good alternative for those who wish not to repeat the 2 hour car transfer between Hue and Danang. This option offers the opportunity to see the historic DMZ and the famous Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park.
Fly to Da Nang International airport which is in the nearby 90km away or 2.5 hours drive to Hue. Besides Viet Nam Airlines, the cheaper carrier Vietjet va Jestar also operate flights from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh city/Ha Noi however the conditions of reservation & ticketing quite stricter than VN.
Travel to Hue by train - The North to South Reunification Line. Vietnam's air-conditioned trains are safe, comfortable & inexpensive, the ideal way for independent travellers to get around and see Vietnam at ground level. An overnight train ride from Hanoi to Hue actually saves time compared to flying, because the train leaves Hanoi city center in the evening and arrives in Hue city center next morning meanwhile in the next afternoon from Ho Chi Minh city, but it's more than this, the train journey is a genuine Vietnamese experience, flying is a wasted opportunity.
Break the journey to explore Phong Nha cave, Quang Binh province. There are flights and trains from Hanoi/Hochiminh city into Dong Hoi. It is 4 hours by vehicle from Hue. Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Park is also home to 300 caves and grottos system.
We predict there would be overloading in Da Nang airport as many travel agents will prefer this back up plan.
